Unawatuna, on Sri Lanka’s southern coast, is a tropical haven for beach lovers and scuba diving enthusiasts alike. The warm, clear waters and vibrant reefs make it a prime destination for divers, offering a mix of marine life and exciting underwater exploration. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced diver, Unawatuna’s dive sites are just a short boat ride away and provide something for everyone.
Unawatuna is a perfect blend of natural beauty and adventure. From exploring vibrant coral reefs to diving into the depths of historic shipwrecks, every dive offers something unique, making it a must-visit destination for divers of all levels.
One of the most popular dive spots is the SS Rangoon, a British steamship that sank in the late 19th century. Now resting 30 metres below the surface, the wreck has become a thriving artificial reef, covered in colourful corals and home to schools of fish and the occasional turtle. In addition to the wreck, Unawatuna’s reefs are teeming with marine species like lionfish, parrotfish, moray eels, and nudibranchs, offering both shallow and deeper dive options. A short distance away, the Galle Shipwreck site provides further exploration of sunken vessels like the SS Oreste, adding a touch of history to your dive experience.
